Friedrich’s vision of landscape is unforgettable, and his work expresses the epitome of what came to be known as romanticism. Although he was little appreciated when he died in 1840, yet during his lifetime his work was collected by royal and noble patrons and is today enthusiastically admired in the museums of Berlin and Dresden, as well as, more recently in London’s National Gallery. Three major exhibitions are planned this year, in Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden, and next year in 2025 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will put on the first solo exhibition of his work in the US. The study day will be an opportunity to study Friedrich’s fascinating work in details and to analyse his unique, intense and powerful engagement with nature.
