The 1880s saw a dramatic change in direction for French avant-garde art. From a focus on the spectacle of modern urban life the Impressionists and their followers turned to more essential, formal concerns. Above all they wanted to focus on the interpretation of light through coloured pigments. To this end, the south of France emerged as a key destination, with its warm climate, vibrant sunlight, and dramatic landscapes. Artists were especially drawn to Provence and the Côte d’Azur, which served as laboratories for the investigation of light in nature. The experiments of Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, and Signac would help to revolutionize modern art across Europe and beyond.
