The Virgin Mary was universally venerated in late medieval Europe, but nowhere was she more revered than in Siena, the Tuscan hilltop town. Between 1250-1400 craftsmen working there produced countless images of her for Siena itself and towns within her orbit like Massa Marittima and San Gimigniano, thereby extending the sphere of Siena's influence as a city state. Sienese artists like Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini. Lippo Memmi and brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, explored established Marian images and devised new Marian iconographies that exerted longlasting influence in Siena and beyond. This study day will explore the work of these craftsmen in conjunction with the long-awaited London, National Gallery exhibition on 14th-century Sienese, to be held later in 2024 (dates to be announced), as part of its Bicentenary celebrations.
