A casual glance down any modern high street will probably provide a reminder of the influence which ancient Greek art and architecture still has. This Lecture day will explore some of the finest manifestations of the Greek artistic achievements with an eye to the influences on, and the influences of, that art. The focus will be on temple architecture and sculptural decoration, vase-painting, plus free-standing sculpture and the birth of portraiture, and we will touch upon the social, religious and historical background to these astonishing artistic creations. Ancient Greek art is greatly admired, and with good reason: the historian and biographer Plutarch wrote, ‘a bloom of eternal freshness hovers over these works and preserves them from the touch of time, as if some unfading spirit of youth, some ageless vitality had been breathed into them.’ Join Dr Steve Kershaw to explore why this is.
Steve will be leading Art Pursuits tours to Greece in 2025. You can see him with Dan Snow on the recently-aired C5 documentary Atlantis: The Discovery with Dan Snow.
