To celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Caspar David Friedrich, Art Pursuits Abroad is offering this special occasion tour to discover the inspiration and the beauty of Caspar David Friedrich. From his charming birthplace of Greifswald to the creative atmosphere of Dresden, Germany where he spent his entire adult and artistic life, this tour showcases two major international special exhibits and various collections exploring Caspar’s life and artistic renewals which affect art to this day.
DAY 1
Morning flight from London Heathrow to Berlin. Adjacent to the Palace of Charlottenburg lies the New Pavilion, built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. This handsome Italianate villa houses an outstanding collection of paintings by Caspar David Friedrich and his contemporaries. From there continue to your four-star hotel. We will enjoy a group meal on our first of three nights in Berlin
DAY 2
Day trip by coach to Greifswald. The unmistakable silhouette of Friedrich’s hometown was thought by the artist to be the most beautiful in northern Germany and was painted by him and fellow Romantics time and again. Our exploration of the town will include a visit to the Pomeranian State Museum to see the special ‘Places of longing’ exhibition. This exhibition highlights one of Caspar’s most well-beloved paintings “The Chalk Cliffs of Rügen” which very rarely leaves its home in Winterthur, Switzerland. Just outside the city lie the monastic ruins of Eldena Abbey. Prussia’s King Friedrich Wilhelm IV initiated a campaign to preserve the haunting, ivy-covered buildings, which probably would not have survived had it not been for Friedrich’s paintings. Return to Berlin for an evening at leisure.
DAY 3
Morning walk to Museum Island to study the outstanding collection of Romantic paintings in the Alte Nationalgalerie, including works by Caspar David. At the Kupferstichkabinett, we will study the Collection of Prints and Drawings, focusing on the etchings and drawings of Caspar and other romantic artists. We shall also visit the Old Master’s Gallery in Berlin. Last night in Berlin. Included dinner
DAY 4
We travel by coach to Dresden and start to explore its rich historic heritage with a coach tour of the city. Stopping for an included lunch, we continue to the Museum of the Romantic which explores the concepts of german romanticism, and the lives and creativity of romantic artists associated with Dresden. A short introductory walk of the historic centre with an independent evening on the first of two nights in Dresden.
DAY 5
We embark on a day on foot in Dresden, dedicated to the works of Caspar David Friedrich, with a visit to the Albertinum, focusing on the special exhibition ‘Where it all started’, offering a unique insight into Friedrich’s early influences, techniques and the evolution of his artistic vision. Further exploration of the permanent collections of the Albertinum museum after an independent lunch break. We continue our studies at the Kupferstichkabinett, (Dresden Museum of Engravings and Drawings) where the exhibition ‘Caspar: The Drawer’ unveils Friedrich’s prowess as a draftsman. Last night in Dresden and a farewell meal together.
DAY 6
A leisurely stroll to the Old Masters Picture Gallery. The collection boasts an exquisite array of paintings spanning centuries An early independent lunch or refreshments in the museum café before our return to Berlin Brandenburg airport for our flight home.
